Rothenburg Germany, a popular stopping place on the Romantic Road, is known for its many festivals.

In Rothenburg, Germany, on any given stop, you can easily find yourself in the middle of a festival. This happened to my husband and I during a long-planned trip when we were delighted to find ourselves in the midst of this colorful Imperial City Festival which celebrates the town’s unique medieval history. Luckily, we planned our trips months in advance for when the festivals are in town, the town is full. Because our timing is driven by other considerations, we rarely checked for festivals. But this time we were lucky. We had a great room at the Markusturm Hotel with a view and the time to take in this wonderful festival.

Tip: The advantage of planning ahead.

My husband and I traveled Europe on our own for many years and both of us were planners. We researched our trips carefully and chose our hotels and B & Bs for their local atmosphere, lower cost and reputation for friendly, helpful people. As a result, we booked our hotel in Rothenberg months in advance and had a room overlooking the main street giving us a bird’s eye view of the festival activities. As we began to set up for our stay, I checked the window view and was delighted to find that we could see the parade and other activities from a great photographic vantage point. We never would have gotten a room in Rothenburg that weekend, much less a prime spot like this, if we had waited until the last minute to book.

“When Accidents Happen.”

An unexpected twist happened on this three-week trip. At our first stop in France, I managed to trip, fall on my right arm and dislocate my right elbow. Yes, we continued and completed our trip with a few minor modifications. And, yes, I continued taking photos, even though I had a full arm cast from shoulder to wrist, thanks to the local emergency room in France and another outpatient trauma center in Austria. I shared the story and tips I learned for managing a trip with a handicap here. Europe in general is not handicap-friendly but people were attentive and helpful and we had a delightful trip.
